When was the last time you typed so fast on your smartphone that the keyboard jammed?

Let me guess… Never? After all, QWERTY keyboard was designed to slow down the typing and to prevent jamming… And with the average speed of 27 words per minute, smartphone typists are quite far from the dangerous speed zone.

Or maybe, just maybe, the reason for this is that there’s no mechanical parts in your phone’s keyboard? That’s why they call it “software keyboard”…

So let me ask you another question – when was the last time you made a typo or got a weird auto-correction on your phone? Today? Five minutes ago?

Are your fingers too big? Do you constantly hit the wrong key by accident?

We can’t do anything about the size of your fingers, but we could imagine a keyboard for your phone that would have larger keys. And if we have to redesign it anyway – should it take less space on the screen?

What about the layout then? Can we optimise it for fast writing, so the most frequently used letters are the easiest to type? Ideally so we could type around 35-45 words per minute, just like on the computer?

Could we make this layout easy to remember? I don’t know, maybe base it on the alphabet, since everybody knows it?

Could we also have the special characters a bit easier to reach, so you don’t have to look for them when you need them?

And editing… Wouldn’t it be great if we could move the cursor, select, copy and paste the text as easy as on the computer?

Congratulations! You have just invented ETAOI keyboard!
